Beat the Heat (And Keep the Kids Happy!)

It’s been a scorcher of a summer, and there’s more heat to come! The unrelenting heat can bring out the “cranky-pants” in the whole gang, so in the interest of family peace (and parental sanity), here are some fun, family-friendly, and affordable “beat-the-heat” places to check out:

Stuart Park Splash Pad, at 5161 Stuart Avenue, Chubbuck, ID
This newly-opened splash pad is a great place to bring the little ones for a refreshing break from the heat. It features a “zero-depth” water play area, with interactive water features that spray water in different directions and patterns. Green spaces and shelters nearby the splash pad make it a pleasant space for kids and adults to enjoy a cool-off day together. Best of all, it’s free of charge! Open 10:00 am – 9:00 pm daily

Edson Fichter Pond, Located behind Indian Hills Elementary School at 666 Cheyenne Avenue, Pocatello, ID. This is a local favorite, Swimming hole with a knotted rope swing. Free of charge

Portneuf Wellness Complex, 2375 Olympus Drive, Pocatello, ID.
This 80 acre state-of-the-art facility features a 7-acre swimming beach, pavilions, concession. Beach is gravelly, so bring flip flops or sandals for comfort. For hours, call 208-251-3505.

Jensen Grove, 733-793 E Airport Road, Blackfoot, ID.

Bear Lake, North Beach, 3890 N Beach Road, St. Charles, ID.
It’s a little further away, but with its beautiful turquoise-blue water and stretches of sandy beach, North Beach at Bear Lake is a great place to spend the day with your family. For a $5.00 daily entrance fee, your gang can spend the day building sand castles, strolling along the shore, and splashing in the cool, clear water! Arrive earlier in the day, as parking and prime beach spots will be easier to come by for early birds.

Ross Park Aquatic Complex , 2901 S 2nd Avenue, Pocatello, ID.
Family-friendly water park features zero-depth children’s pool, interactive water play, activity pool, waterslide, and “lazy river” pool. Open daily until August 27 season close. Monday and Wednesdays from 5:00 to 8:00pm are Family Nights at 50% off admission. Check out their website for more information.

Wherever you decide to “beat the heat”, remember this: in the middle of a January snowstorm, these hot August days will be looking pretty good!
