You asked, and we answered! We’re here to answer some of our patients most asked questions regarding scaling and root planing.
Scaling and planing involve a deep cleaning above and below the gum line near the roots of your teeth. Your dentist or dental hygienist will use a special tool to scale your teeth, removing all signs of plaque, tartar and food debris.
Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, can cause severe problems for your teeth if left untreated. If your gums bleed while brushing, this may be a sign of gingivitis. In this stage, your gums haven’t had permanent damage done to them. But left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, which is where scaling and planning come into play.
The cost of periodontal scaling and root planning can cost anywhere from $140-$210. These costs are dependent upon what tools or technology your dentist uses for the treatment, where you live and what your insurance covers. It’s always a good idea, before making any decision, to speak with your insurance provider and see what your plan will cover.
No, this treatment is relatively pain-free. A local anesthetic is given to your prior to the procedure to numb the area so you aren’t able to feel any pain during the procedure. Once the anesthetic begins to work, your dentist will then begin scaling your teeth.
